More interference: X10 cameras and Wi-Fi networks

If you install an XI0 wireless camera and suddenly start having problems on your WLAN, it's because the camera also uses the 2.4 GHz spectrum. X10 cameras don't play well with Wi-Fi. You can get the two to coexist; you just have to make a few adjustments to your Wi-Fi configuration.

According to X10 Inc., its video equipment uses four channels on the following frequencies:

- Channel A: 2.411 GHz

- Channel B: 2.434 GHz

- Channel C: 2.453 GHz

- Channel D: 2.473 GHz

802.11b divides the spectrum into the following channels:

- Channel 1: 2.412 GHz

- Channel 2: 2.417 GHz

- Channel 3: 2.422 GHz

- Channel 4: 2.427 GHz

- Channel 5: 2.432 GHz

- Channel 6: 2.437 GHz

- Channel 7: 2.442 GHz

-Channel 8: 2.447 GHz

- Channel 9: 2.452 GHz

- Channel 10: 2.457 GHz

- Channel 11: 2.462 GHz

The easiest thing to do is set the camera's channel as far away from your WLANs channel frequency as possible. For example, if your WLAN is operating on channel 3 (2.422 GHz), you could reset your camera to channel D (2.473 GHz) to keep the signals from overlapping. You could also change the WLAN's channel but that might be a lot more work, depending on your Wi-Fi setup.
